Why does Cornbelt Financial have a long list of discovery questions?
Cornbelt Financial maintains an extensive list of discovery questions for several reasons. These reasons typically stem from a combination of factors such as evolving tax laws, the intricacies involved in tax returns (especially for individuals managing one or more businesses), or instances where clients might not have initially supplied all the requested information, necessitating a more comprehensive set of inquiries.
HOW MUCH WILL MY TAX PREP COST?
You'll receive an engagement letter with a breakdown of billing. We generally collect up to a 50% deposit at engagement acceptance and bill the remaining balance upon completion. Additional out-of-scope services are billed at our hourly rate noted within the engagement letter.
Can I schedule an in-person meeting to discuss my tax situation?
While Cornbelt Financial operates remotely, we can arrange in-person meetings at our office locations if necessary. However, we find that in most instances a call or video call works just as well.
HOW WILL I GET YOU MY TAX DOCUMENTS?
Use our robust operating platform, Canopy, for secure document uploads via the client portal or mobile app. You will receive an email inviting you to set up your access. You may also request a secure upload link or you can also drop off or mail documents to our two office locations in CO. Once your portal is set up, you may login here.
WHAT TAX DOCUMENTS WILL YOU NEED?
Generally, if you've provided the document before, you'll need to provide it again. Reach out for a specific list, or refer to our helpful guide that outlines key documents needed for individuals and business owners.
How do I log into Canopy to upload my tax return documents?
Click here to login to your Client Portal and upload your tax return documents.
WHEN WILL WE MEET TO GET STARTED ON MY TAX RETURNS?
For optimal efficiency, please upload or drop off  your tax documents as soon as you receive the majority of your documents in January or February. There are some common forms not received until March but we can get started on the tax returns before these are received. We'll connect via email, phone, or video to discuss any outstanding items or review your returns.
WHO WILL I BE WORKING WITH?
At Cornbelt Financial our shared inbox and phone serves as the initial point of contact. During tax season, you'll be assigned a tax professional based on specialty and staff capacity. Our operating system allows transparency between staff to view client notes, prior work product, and access other insights for ease of knowledge transfer. To reach our team please visit our contact page or email [email protected].
What is the turnaround time for tax return preparation?
At Cornbelt Financial turnaround times vary based on complexity and time of year. Your assigned tax professional can provide more specific information. However, for fastest turnaround times please get us your tax documents as soon as you can during January and February. Our goal is to prepare and deliver tax returns within 1-2 weeks, but much of this is dependent on how timely we can receive follow-ups to our inquiries for additional information, or the timing of the year, in relation to deadlines and staff capacity.
HOW WILL I SIGN MY TAX RETURNS?
Electronic signature requests will be sent through our operating system. Occasionally, we may need wet signatures, in which case, we'll mail you copies to sign and send back to us.
How Do I access tax-related documents after they've been prepared?
Access finalized tax documents through your client portal. We will notify you via email when your returns are ready for review and to download.
How do I make payments for your services?
Payments can be made through the client portal using secure methods.
Why do I need to make estimated tax payments?
The IRS requires all tax due for a particular tax year to be paid by December 31, of that tax year.  If you don't have sufficient withholding from a W2 or other sources of income, you will need to make estimated tax payments to pay all of your tax liability for the year.  We can assist with year-end tax planning to avoid unpleasant surprises at tax time.
What's the difference between a CPA and an EA?
A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a state license covering various business accounting aspects such as Audit, Financial Reporting, Regulations, and Business Concepts. While an Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federal license focused solely on taxation. Both have equal authorities in the eyes of the IRS.

An Enrolled Agent (EA) holds the highest credential awarded by the IRS, putting them in the same category as CPAs and attorneys when it comes to tax expertise. EAs have unlimited representation rights, meaning they can represent any client in any tax matter before the IRS, even if they didn't prepare the tax return in question. Beyond just preparing tax returns, EAs can offer a wide range of services. They provide expert tax advice, assist clients through audits, negotiate payment agreements with the IRS, settle tax debts, handle various collection issues, and manage taxpayer appeals. This makes EAs valuable allies for anyone navigating complex tax situations.
What cybersecurity measures do you have in place to protect my sensitive information?
At Cornbelt Financial, safeguarding our clients' sensitive information is a top priority. We have implemented comprehensive cybersecurity measures to ensure the utmost protection for your data.

Our current operating platform is fortified with robust encryption techniques and advanced security protocols. This ensures that all data transmitted or stored within our systems remains confidential and inaccessible to unauthorized parties. We employ industry-standard encryption methods to safeguard information both in transit and at rest, providing a multi-layered defense against potential threats.

Moreover, our use of state-of-the-art password management software allows us to enforce stringent access controls. This software enables us to limit access based on geographic location and IP address, adding an extra layer of security to prevent unauthorized entry or suspicious activities.

Rest assured, we continually evaluate and update our security measures to stay abreast of the evolving cybersecurity landscape. Our dedicated team regularly undergoes training to remain vigilant against emerging threats, thereby ensuring the ongoing protection of your sensitive data.
